How to Develop Motivation to Change Your Life
Learning to develop motivation is the key to making significant changes in your life. There may be things in your life that you are not completely satisfied with, but trying to change can feel too difficult. Use the following techniques to help you find motivation to make positive improvements.
Take Responsibility For Your Situation
At one point in my life I felt like I desperately needed a change. I was getting into a slump, and I didn't really see a way out of it. I decided to do something radical, and ended up moving to another country for a year. It was an amazing experience, a chance to start completely fresh in a new environment, with new people, and away from everyone and everything I knew.
After living there for a while, I noticed something very peculiar. I had escaped my problems temporarily by moving away, but similar problems started soon started creeping up again in this new environment. The same issues that I had tried to get away from materialized in the new environment.
I learned a very important lesson: I am responsible for creating my situation. It is all to easy to blame external factors for a current situation, but as I found out from my experience, changing the environment does not solve your problems in the long term. This revelation can be very empowering.
Once you realize you are largely responsible for the issues in your life, you then have the power to take control and make changes for the better.
Find the Patterns
If you find the same problems coming up in your life, there is probably some internal issue that you need to recognize and resolve before your external world will change.
In my case, there were several thought patterns and avoidance behaviors that I habitually engaged in resulted in external problems. I realized that until I changed my inner patterns, it didn't matter what environment I was in, I would start encountering the same type of problems that have plagued me for years.
In order to make any change you need to clearly see what is causing your present situation.
Decide to Change
Once you have taken responsibility for your situation and discovered the patterns that relate to your problems, the next step to develop motivation is to decide to change.
It's not enough to just want a current problem to go away, you need to clearly decide to deal with the root cause. Recognizing the patterns and resolving to change will give you a significant boost in your motivation and help you to change.
Visualize your Outcome
Take the time to see in clear detail what it would be like to resolve the cause of your issue, how it would improve your life, make things easier, better, etc.
To develop motivation to make a change you need to have a strong alternative to replace your current situation. The comparison between where you are and where you could be creates an incentive for you to make changes.
Take Action
Start taking action to replace your current pattern of thought and behavior with thoughts and actions that align with your preferred outcome. Use your ideal outcome to make an action plan to start moving from where you are to where you want to be. Seeing positive results from your efforts will serve to reinforce your new patterns and keep your motivation high.
Making significant changes in your life may seem difficult, but using these techniques can give you direction and hep you develop motivation to change. By taking responsibility, recognizing your patterns and deciding to change you can make significant improvements in your life.
