Finding Good Diet Plans

I have spent some time looking for good diet plans, experimenting with various options until I settled on one that works for me. Here are some observations from my search that may help you when looking for good diet plans.

Long Term Focus

I’ve seen diets that promise quick results without too much effort. I personally have never tried one of these, but have seen others do so.

While these kind of diets may help you lose a few pounds in a short amount of time, everyone I know who has done one just as quickly gained the weight back as soon as they went off the diet.

For long term results, good diet plans are long term- you need to be prepared to make permanent changes. Avoid any diet that you’re not willing to follow over the long term.

Balanced and Flexible

There are some diets out there that severely limit what you can eat. Obviously if you have specific allergies or issues with certain foods you will want to restrict your diet, otherwise look for diet plans that give you some freedom and flexibility in what you can eat.

Also you want to insure that you are getting all of the essential vitamins, proteins, fats, etc. that you need in your diet. Without a balanced diet you may develop issues over time because of deficiencies. If you decide to follow a stricter diet plan, talk to a professional to ensure that you are filling all of your nutritional needs.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

This is my own bias slipping in, but I think that all good diet plans should include plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. I have experimented with a variety of diets, and found that for me personally, I always felt best when I was eating a lot of fruits and veggies.

Sometimes it can be hard to eat enough, I know when I first tried it I had a hard time working in enough consistently. The easiest way for me to increase my intake without making every meal a salad was to buy a juicer and to start making green smoothies. It was easy for me to make a smoothie in the morning, and make a juice after work, and between the two I was ensuring that I had at least the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables every day.

Experiment

I feel like I have a pretty good core diet plan for myself, but I still experiment with introducing new foods or food combinations, and try various supplements to see how they effect my energy levels. I think it is important for you to find out for yourself what works and what doesn’t for you diet.

Make Gradual Changes

Once you have decided on a plan, start making changes slowly. Introduce the recommended foods slowly, and try to find good substitutes for any foods that you’re going to give up.

I know that through gradual changes I’ve been able to drastically improve my diet without going through too many painful changes- the gradual shifts make it easier to stick with the diet and get used to new alternatives.
