Alternatives to Motivation Posters

I'll admit that most motivation posters I've seen can seem cheesy or over the top.

If anything I almost prefer looking at demotivational posters just for laughs. While many of the traditional images that are displayed in offices may seem a bit cheesy or inspire cynicism rather than motivate you, it doesn't mean that the concept is a bad one.

Purpose of Motivational Images

The idea of using motivation images is to create an environment that puts you in a positive state. If some of the traditional motivation posters do that for you, then by all means use them. But if you find that they seem too over the top, find something else that works for you.

There are many alternatives that can have a positive effect. For example, on my computer desktop I usually try to find a wallpaper of the ocean or beach as I find those kind of images put me in a positive mind set. I associate relaxation and feeling soothed with the ocean, and those images serve to relax me and put me in a resourceful state of mind.

Experiement with Images

Experiment and pay attention to how various images affect you. Find things in your life that put you in a positive state of mind, that inspire creativity, or that help you to focus. While images of the ocean or beach put me in a relaxed state of mind, I have found other types of images inspire different states of mind.

For example, when I was in college, I put a Salvidor Dali picture up in my room. The image was somewhat bizarre like most Dali images, but very fascinating. I found it really helped me to get in a more creative state of mind, it would take me out of normal thought patterns and inspire more fanciful thoughts.

Images of goals you'd like to achieve in your life can also serve as good alternatives to motivational posters. Find an image that represents your ideal physical state, an image of someone whose achievements inspire you, or images of things you'd like to have in your life.

These images should remind you of what you are working towards in your life, of who you'd like to be or what you'd like to acquire. Seeing the motivational images frequently will keep your goals present and in your awareness, helping to keep you motivated to take action.

Humorous Images

Another example of things that can serve in place of the traditional motivation posters are comics or other funny images. At one point I had one of those Dilbert desk calendars, and I really looked forward to reading a new comic each morning. The ones that really made me laugh I posted around my workstation, and seeing them each day would really help to put me in a positive state of mind. Laughter has a very powerful positive effect on your state of mind.

While some of the traditional motivation posters may seem cheesy, putting up motivational images in your environment that change your mental state will have a very positive impact on your overall motivation levels. Find what types of images work for you to create a positive state, a creative state, or whatever other state will help you to get motivated and stay motived.
