Five Self Esteem Exercises

These self esteem exercises can be very helpful if you are trying to overcome low self esteem, or if you just want to build up your self esteem a little higher.

Repeated use of these exercises can help to reinforce the positive effects and really help you to feel better about yourself, develop your confidence, and increase your level of self motivation.

1. Re-Experience a Past Success

The first of these self esteem exercises is to re-experience a past success. Remember a time in your past where you did something really well, where you were just in the flow and everything just worked for you. Re-experience every moment in vivid detail, remember what the situation looked like, how it felt, who else was there. If you pick a powerful past experience and completely visualize it, you should feel some echo of the positive feelings that were present in the experience, and give you a positive boost.

Doing visualizations like this often can help to build up your self esteem over time by reminding yourself of things you have done well.

2. Imagine a Future Success

The second of these self esteem exercises is to imagine a future success. In this exercise, take something that you will be doing, or should be doing, and imagine yourself doing it extremely well.

Similar to the previous exercise, be very vivid in your visualization, see all the little details and experience the positive outcome of the experience. This type of visualization can help build up your internal belief that you can be successful and gives you motivation to take action.

3. Get Another Perspective

The third of these exercises is to get another perspective. Having someone evaluate your strengths and talents can help you develop a positive self image.

Sometimes we take our strengths for granted, or are sometimes unaware of some of the positive qualities that we just naturally exhibit. Ask someone who you trust and have a close relationship with to take the time to come up with a list of positive qualities and strengths that you have (and offer to do the same for them). A different perspective can boost your confidence and increase your self esteem.

4. Get Something Done

The fourth of these self esteem exercises is to get something done. A strong predicate of self esteem is the belief in your self efficacy, the ability to get things done. Strengthen this belief by finding an activity or task that you've been putting off, and just get it done. Choose something that can be accomplished relatively easily, and just take the time to get it done completely. Getting one thing done can increase your self efficacy.

5. Make a Change

The last of these exercises is to make a permanent positive change. It is easy to fall into a rut in life, and to have self esteem negatively impacted by the seeming day to day drudgery. Pick a change you can make to your life, just to do something different. It can be something small: a new haircut, a change in style of clothes, a new skill or hobby, even a change in your environment. Sometimes a little change can give you a boost to your self esteem as you feel like you have the power to influence your life for the better.
