Self Improvement Advice

Here’s a little self improvement advice that I have personally found helpful in my personal development efforts. Following this advice can help you to advance your efforts and lead you to greater success.

Find your Bliss

This statement by Joseph Campbell is one of the best pieces of self improvement advice that I have encountered. In looking to improve your life, the best thing you can do is find your passion, the thing that truly makes you happy.

It is all too easy to try to make everybody around you happy, or to just do what you are told without rocking the boat. But a life without passion is just a hollow shell.

The process of growing up for many people involved shutting out your passions, your individuality, your dreams. You may have been taught to live in the real world, to forget your silly ideals and to compromise your dreams.

In order to succeed, you had to learn to please others, sublimate your own desires for what others wanted you to do. But things do not have to continue this way for you.

I believe that everyone has a special gift, a genius that is unique to them, and the main goal for life is to find it. In finding your personal genius you will find your passion/bliss. This genius is what you do well, what comes to you naturally, what you can uniquely contribute to the world.

Finding this genius, finding your bliss will provide more satisfaction than any other element. Forget what others want for you and find what you really want for yourself. Find your bliss.<

Overcome your Fears

Inner fears are probably the biggest block to finding your passion in life. We are often controlled and trapped by our fears. Do you think that at the end of your life, you’ll be thinking “I’m sure glad I played it safe, that I didn’t take any big chances”?

I don’t know about you, but I would rather live life to the fullest, take those chances, push my boundaries. The biggest regrets I have are those opportunities not taken, the phone calls not made, the conversations that didn’t happen, all due to giving into fears.

Only by facing fears will you have the chance to experience the greatest highs and lows of life. Playing it safe will lead to mediocrity. Learn to explore why you fear certain situations and push yourself to take action anyway. While fear never completely goes away, it is possible to learn to ignore or overcome it when opportunity calls.

It’s the Journey, not the Destination

It’s all to easy to think that if you could just make so much a year, lose so many pounds, or find that one special person that life would be complete, you would be satisfied. While achieving a goal feels nice, it’s not too long before the satisfaction wears off and you start looking for the next level, the next challenge.

Life is much more interesting if you focus on the process of achieving rather than the achievements themselves. This last piece of self improvement advice is to learn to enjoy the process. The destinations are only momentary- the journey is constant.
