Top Workplace Habits to Increase Motivation

Here are some top workplace habits that will help to increase your self motivation at work. Utilizing these habits will help to be more effective and achieve more in your career.

Manage Expectations

Get in the habit of managing expectations, and make an effort to surpass what others expect of you at work. Keep expectations at a reasonable level, don't promise what you are not sure you can do, and give yourself a little bit of leeway in time frames. Then go the extra mile in what you produce, do everything to your highest standards.

Be judicial in how you apply this- don't tell people that is will take a month to do something that could be done in a couple of days just so you can make yourself look good. Always make the extra effort to do excellent work. Holding yourself to high expectations will motivate you to get started on projects and get them done well.

Organize and Review Your Day

Make a habit of planning your day first thing in the morning, as well as reviewing the day before you leave. Planning and reviewing your day helps by giving you perspective both on what needs to get done during the day as well as letting you see what you have accomplished during the day.

This will also help you to prioritize and focus your efforts, and your motivation will be higher as you will have clarity and perspective on your projects and obligations.

Stay Positive (But Realistic)

One of the best workplace habits to develop is a habit of staying positive. People who make a habit of seeing the negative in everything sap motivation in the workplace and make it hard to get things done.

Being positive does not mean ignoring reality- you'll never make issues or problems go away by pretending they don't exist, but there is usually always a silver lining to even the worst situations.

Be realistic in what you can accomplish and set goals that are within your current abilities. Maintain a positive attitude as you approach your work, and you'll have an easier time keeping up your motivation.

Communicate

Good communication is one of the workplace habits that can really impact your motivation levels. It is easier to work on projects and assignments and get them done if expectations are made clear and issues and problems are discussed and resolved.

It's hard to keep motivation up if you work hard on a project only to find out that you took the wrong direction on things and your result is not what was needed. Get in the habit of communicating with everyone involved and make sure they're on the same page as you.

Manage your Work Flow

Interruptions and distractions during the day can decrease your efficiency and make it hard to stay motivated. Create a system to manage your work flow, and make a habit of using that system to keep things from disrupting your momentum.

A general idea is to filter all incoming work and requests, determine if they need immediate attention or if they can be dealt with later, and a way to keep track of what needs to be done later. This way as things come to you during the day you will be prepared to prioritize tasks and have a way to handle the low priority items later.

Using these workplace habits to increase motivation and be more productive will pay off in the long run to help you produce good work, stay organized, and manage your work flow better.
